There has been ongoing controversy and argument’s for many years about which is the best Martial Art to know in a Survival, life or death type of a situation. Those argument’s have been going on many years since the beginning of Martial art’s. Where Martial art’s started is an argument all on it’s own. Some believe it started with the Indian monk’s of the Buddhist temple that then brought it into China and the Shaolin temple where Kung Fu was originated. Others believe it started centuries before with the Greeks with Pancretia and Greco Roman wrestling. I personally lean towards the later being the case. The Greeks were brutal and effective in battle thanks to their hard core training and straight to the point tactics. Krav Maga, the fighting system we will be talking about here has some similarities.
So which is the best Martial Art to train for real life situations? When it comes down to it, there really isn’t a bad Martial Art. They all have There strength’s and weaknesses. The problem with some of the more advanced styles is they can take a very long time to get to the point where you can use it in a self defense type situation. Some of the Kung Fu styles and Karate styles are effective, but can take 5 years just to get the basics down. Some of the other styles like Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and Jujitsu are also effective and can be learned in a shorter period of time. These are good styles but also have weaknesses and more or less one dimensional. This is where MMA and some of the newer styles like Krav Maga, Jeet Kun Do, and Systema stepped in and started combining the strong points of a few styles together in order to make one well rounded fighting system. Whether it is a stand up blow for blow fight, or it goes to the ground in a grappling battle, you will have the tools you need. Imi Lichtenfeld. He developed this effective fighting style for the Jewish community to help protect themselves against Nazi soldiers. Later on in the 1950’s, Krav Maga was adopted by the Isreali special forces as their main fight training.
So why is Krav Maga good to learn if you want a real self defense based system? Krav Maga is a direct and to the point strike based art. There isn’t any nonsense about it. It was developed to prepare you both internally and physically to be able to handle pretty much any situation that you may encounter. It also tends to take less time to be able to implement what you learn into a real life situation. Of course like other arts, it takes time to fully master. It is also suitable for any age, gender, and size. It actually is geared towards the smaller fighter. It is also fairly well rounded. You learn strikes, chokes, arm locks, takedowns, weapons training and defense, fighting multiple attackers, etc.. Although an aggressive art in nature, it is taught to try and avoid situations all together and remain calm and relaxed.
To sum it up, Krav Maga is a great self defense based Martial Art. Is it perfect? No, but there isn’t a perfect martial art. Your success depends on you and the work put in. There are holes that can be exploited, but only by someone that has trained for many years in a highly technical style, or created there own. Realistically though, how often are you gonna run into that?
